Steppin is a social dance which origin includes another African American dance, the Bop. It has started from it's rooted home of Chicago, IL and has spreaded throughout the US even to the UK's London, Britain. It can involve a partnered couple or creative individual doing patterns to a 6 or 8 count beat incorporating various pushes, pulls, turns, and footwork. The genres of music usually include R&B, Neo Soul, Jazz and Rap as well and many others. It can be in different settings from casual local sets to major national black tie affair events. It embraces a smooth, elegant and classy style which steppers have adapted into their fashion and lifestyle.

Whos_Behind_SIUWho's Behind Steppin It Up

I would like to introduce myself to everyone who would like to associate the face with the voice behind Steppin It Up. Professionally I go by Qiana and with associates (because of my middle name) I go by Nikki. I am currently an active stepper on the scene. I promote the dance every opportunity I can as well as some instruction when requested. I decided to start Steppin It Up to add to the promotion and growth of steppin here in L.A. as well as unity.

2nd National Steppers Convention - Miami

Veronica SolomonSea, salt and sand greeted the conventioneers when they landed in South Florida and as they made their way to the Newport Pier Beach Resort in Sunny Isles just north of South Beach which was the home of the 2nd Annual National Chi-Style Steppers Convention. As I write this, and reflect on my own personal feelings about the event and even before it jumped off, it was nice to have this type of affair in my home town. I live less than a twenty minute drive away from where all the festivities were taking place and with the price of gas that was a blessing. The convention was the best thing ever and for the first time I was steppin’ on a grand scale and I didn’t have to buy a plane ticket and that was a bonus.

Ladies Appreciation Set

Ladies Appreciation DaySaturday, May 14th, 2011 after a long week of work, kids, and planning upcoming events, I decided I was going to go out and enjoy myself. I have been receiving text messages and Facebook invites all week about a Ladies Appreciation set and on that day that’s just what I needed. I walked in my closet, picked out a dress then a pair of shoes to match that I could look good and cut up in. After I got dressed for the occasion I put on my gloss, threw on my shades, then messaged some friends to come out and join me.

How Long Have You Been Steppin?

Whos_Behind_SIUHot Topic of the Month

Is it the DJs or Steppers fault if the same songs are played every week?

(B. Bessant): It's mos def the dj's. They don't evolve or expand their playlists. When I asked one dj about steppin to r&b and neo soul played on the radio, she said she doesn't listen to the radio. WTH? They owe it to the dancers to get current and stay current. Not current = tired and whack. Whack dj's are a BIG reason why the steppin community is so small and isolated and slow to expand. Promoters need to look for some new talent on the ones and twos.

(J. Brown): The steppers dont allow the Djs to grow. When a Dj does step out of the box no one response to the floor to stepp, so what happens he goes back to music that is familar to the crowd and the floor is packed, and not only that every region is different, what you grew up listening to, you have a tendency to respone to. i can go on and on wit this, nice topic nikki
